Although USB printers that are connected directly to a computer can be shared with other devices on a network, the computer that the USB printer is connected to must be switched on for any printing to be initiated. By connecting a printer to your router, it is added to the network and operates independently of any computers. Launch your computer's Web browser and navigate to the print server's default IP address. Consult the print server's instruction manual for details on its IP address, which is typically '192.168.1.10' or similar. The print server's configuration page is displayed in your Web browser.

Enter the name of your wireless network, which is often referred to as its SSID, in the 'Network,' 'Wireless Network Name' or 'SSID' section. The name of the section differs depending on brand.

Check the 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' option, which allows your wireless router to assign the printer server -- and therefore your printer -- its own IP address once setup is complete.

Check the appropriate option in the 'Security Mode' section to match the type of security used by your wireless router, such as 'WEP,' 'WPA,' WPA 2' or 'None.' Enter your wireless network's passcode in the 'Network Key,' 'PSK' or 'Network Passcode' section.

Click the button to save the print server's configuration, and then disconnect the print server from the computer.

Position the print server next to your printer and connect the two using a USB cable.

Connect both the printer and the print server to a power outlet and switch them on. The print server establishes a Wi-Fi connection with your wireless router, making the printer available to any computers connected to your local network.

Tip

• Allowing the router to assign the print server with an IP address simplifies the setup procedure once you have disconnected the server from your computer and requires it to establish its own connection with the network.
• Your print server must be connected via an Ethernet cable either to your computer or your router for its initial setup. Once the initial setup is complete you can access its configuration page via Wi-Fi using your computer's Web browser.
• Print servers do not require usernames or passwords to log in to them because they are protected by your network's security passcode through the wireless router.
• Most print servers have indicator lights on the device to inform you of its status, such as its network connection and the presence of a USB printer.
• Some print servers may come with a CD for setting them up automatically.
