For those of us who are over a certain age, some of our first memories on a computer were playing PC games in MS-DOS. If you have ever felt nostalgic for some of those old games from the 80s and 90s, like DOOM, Aladdin, Dangerous Dave, Warcraft Orcs & Humans, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and lots more, then DOSBox is the tool you need to make your dream into a reality. This program allows you to emulate an MS-DOS environment without modifying your Windows operating system.
Newer operating systems have come a long way since, say, Windows 95, but for all their technical advancements, they have made it complicated to play games that were designed for much simpler systems, like MS-DOS. With DOSBox, you can transport yourself back to the early 90s with that familiar black box where you can write command lines. If you’re too young to remember any of this, there’s bound to be a tutorial you can follow somewhere online.
For DOSBox to detect the game, you first need to inform it of the unit you are using. To do this, use the command “mount”, and mount the selected unit. If you need to increase the cycles in your CPU, press Ctrl + F8.

In the past, you had topurchase a rather pricey program called Adobe Type Manager (ATM)in order to use Adobe PostScript Type I fonts. With TrueType soprominent, PS fonts have become far less important to the averagecomputer user over the years. But many fonts are only availableas PS Type I, and if you ever plan to prepare materials foroffset printing, PostScript fonts are the way to go to insure thebest possible reproduction of your designs. FreeZip is a small freeware program designed to allowyou to unzip .ZIP files that you often find on the internet, AOL,CompuServe or local BBS's. Only 267k and it gives you the simpleability to extract files from a .ZIP archive to either thecurrent directory or to a 'nominated' directory of yourchoosing. FreeZip integrates with Windows Explorer and uses fileassociations and context menus to zip or unzip files, includinglong file names and subdirectories. If you know how to useWindows Explorer, then you do not have to learn anything new touse FreeZip. The setup is a single-click process and there are nooptions or settings involved. FreeZip comes as a executable file,freezip.exe. Simply download it, then find it in Windows Explorerand double-click on freezip.exe to install.

PrintFile is a terrific timesaver for users thatrepeatedly need to print certain files that they have created.First, you must set up your computer to 'Print to File'for your particular printer. Then when you create a computerdocument, you can print it to a file. PrintFile allows you toprint that file at any time without first having to start theoriginal application. Microsoft left a number ofthings out of Windows 95 that most users would appreciate. Thislittle package solves a few of the problems. ConfigBack is alittle freeware utility from Microsoft that allows you to saveyour Windows 95 configuration to a file. It's never a bad idea todo this before a major installation like Internet Explorer 4.0,which wants to reconfigure your entire computer to suit Microsoft(not you!). ConfigBack will let you save up to 9 differentconfigurations and restore them at a later date.

RegClean 4.1a is another niceMicrosoft utility designed to deal with the Windows 95 registryfiles. It claims to clean up anything that gets messed up duringinstallations, emergency shutdowns, etc. Microsoft is nowoffering a slightly revised version, effective January 8, 1998. Well,the file disappeared from the Microsoft site again, so we foundan alternative location.

Super NoteTab is a terrific freewarereplacement for the extremely lame Windows 95 Notepad. You'llwonder how you ever got along without this one. All of thefeatures you could probably even dream up are already in thisbaby. It's even 'web enabled', allowing you to easilyedit HTML files. If you spend muchtime browsing the WWW, you should really consider trying thissoftware from Matthias Wolf of Berlin, Germany. Cache Explorerprovides you with the ability to review any web pages you haverecently visited when you are offline. Let that sink in. If youwish to refer back to a website you visited two days ago, CacheExplorer will let you bring up those pages, assuming they arestill in your cache, complete with all graphics in place. This isremarkably helpful, especially for laptop users that may be awayfrom a telephone line! We don't link directly to this softwarebecause you should really visit the website.
